Hi there! Sorry I have not been on this site for a while, we have been really busy making our new game - The LEGO® Movie Videogame!
We have all been working really hard on it and we are now almost finished!
It's been so exciting! We've been working alongside Animal Logic, the team in Australia making the movie and so have been able to see how it has progressed each month and how the story is getting more and more refined - it is really funny! You are going to love it!
Our game is set in all the same worlds that are seen in the movie, so that you can play out all the key action moments for yourself.
The big thing about this game is that for the first time we have made the whole of the game world out of LEGO! All the roads, buildings, trees, water, fire, mountains, etc. as well as all the vehicles, props, characters, animals etc. that we usually have - Everything is LEGO!
Unfortunately we couldn't make everything breakable, as this would have made it really difficult to set up puzzles and for you to follow the story, but rest assured, there is plenty of smashable LEGO all over the game!! :0)
All the backgrounds are built using virtual LEGO pieces, so that if you guys wanted to copy them and build the levels yourself, you could do it. However, in videogames we have to optimise it afterwards, which means taking out all the bits you can't see. All the backs and undersides of each brick that you will never see get removed so that the game world is not too big from a memory point of view. If we kept all the LEGO pieces whole then the game would run really slowly and wouldn't be fast and fun to play!
If you look at these images below it might explain what I mean.
This wall here on the left is made up of LEGO bricks.
If we move the camera around to the left so that we get closer to the wall,
and then keep moving the camera we end up seeing behind the wall ...
You can see that there is nothing behind it. All the unnecessary sides to the LEGO bricks have been removed.
The other really exciting thing about making the whole game out of LEGO has been making the particle effects LEGO too. Particle effects are things like explosions, water splashes, fire, smoke, lava, etc.
In normal LEGO games they look realistic
But in LEGO Movie Videogame they are all made of LEGO bricks! Here are some examples, but you kind of need to see them moving to really see how great they are!
The animation style has also changed for this game. We usually bend the arms and legs a bit in our other games, but with us trying to keep as true to real world LEGO as possible on this game, the minifigures in The LEGO® Movie Videogame move in a more realistic LEGO way - it is more rigid and less bendy than in previous games.
We have been able to include lots of characters from other LEGO games too which has been great!
We have Batman, Superman, Green Lantern and Wonder woman, as well as Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings and some fun characters like Shakespeare and Lady Liberty!
We have two new game mechanics in The LEGO® Movie Videogame called Master Build and Instruction Build
When you play as one of the master builders you will be able to choose items from around the scene and use the pieces to create a totally new object. For example in one scene you select a window cleaning access platform, a lamp post and an air conditioning unit and from these you can create the front half of the superbike :0)
With Instruction builds you collect instruction pages from around the level and use them to build a new object by putting the correct pieces on the model following the instructions.
It is going to be on 8 different platforms (XBox One, XBox 360, PS4, PS3, PS Vita, 3DS, WiiU and PC ) so pretty much anyone and everyone can play it! :0)
I hope you love the game as much as we do and you never know I may bump into you in February at your local cinema watching The LEGO Movie! :0)
